A Disney World worker who was injured yesterday while repairing the Primeval Whirl ride inside Animal Kingdom died early today, reports the Orlando Sentinel.
Russell Sherry Roscoe, 52, suffered massive head injuries and was airlifted to a local hospital where he died early this morning.
Disney has not released details on exactly how the accident happened, but according to the 911 call he was working on part of the roller coaster ride known as "The Little Dip."
"We need somebody right now," an unidentified co-worker told a 911 dispatcher. "One of our maintenance guys got hit by a moving vehicle ... He got in the way of a moving vehicle." Roscoe's co-workers administered first-aid care while waiting for the paramedics to arrive.
"We're trying to keep him conscious," the co-worker told 911 dispatchers before calling out words of encouragement to Roscoe. "Stay conscious, please! ... Stay with us ... Stay with us, man!" At the time of the accident the ride was closed for previously scheduled maintenance. The accident occurred out of view of theme-park patrons.
"Our Walt Disney World community has experience a tragic loss," said Walt Disney World President Meg Crofton in a statement to AOL Travel News (news.travel.aol.com). "We extend our heartfelt condolences to Russ Roscoe's family and we are working to assist them during this difficult time; our thoughts and our prayers are with them."
"Our thoughts are also with Russ' fellow cast members and the first responders who came to his aid. We deeply appreciate all their efforts," Crofton continues. Roscoe's death is the second associated with the ride. In 2007, Disney worker Karen Price, 63, died five days after being struck by a roller coaster vehicle while she was working on an elevated loading platform. After Price's death, sensors were installed in the Primeval Whirl ride to prevent a similar accident from happening. In 2008, federal investigators fined Disney $21,000 for the accident that caused Price's death.
